Characterizing light elements (carbon and below) was considered outside the reach of energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), and left to alternative techniques. The next target in the EDS light element hit list is lithium (Li). Detecting lithium requires more than just a cutting edge EDS detector. Sample preparation, sample handling, the SEM environment and the sample itself all play a major role. We discuss the challenges and solutions required for proper collection and analysis of Li x-rays generated by an electron beam within an SEM.
